What Is Print Bleed? Bleed and Safe Area Explained

Bleed is artwork extending past the trim line so colour reaches the edge after cutting; safe area keeps text away from that edge. A practical setup guide for cards, flyers, brochures, stickers and large format.

Short answer
Bleed is extra artwork extending past the trim line— normally 3 mm (0.125 in) on every edge — so that when the stack is cut, colour runs right to the edge instead of leaving a white sliver. The safe areais the opposite: keep text and logos at least 3 mm inside the trim so nothing important gets sliced off. Cutting is never perfect to the millimetre, and these two margins absorb that movement.

Why bleed exists at all

Printing does not happen one card at a time. Your job is printed on a large sheet, often many copies at once, and then that stack is cut down with a guillotine. A stack of paper under a blade shifts fractionally. The blade itself has a kerf. Paper expands and contracts slightly with humidity.

The result is that the actual cut lands within about a millimetre or so of where it was supposed to. That tolerance is completely normal and every printer in the world works within it. Bleed and safe area are how a design is built to survive it.

Without bleed, a cut landing a hair outside your artwork leaves a thin white line along one edge. It is subtle, it is obvious once you notice it, and it is the single most common reason a job looks amateur.

The three lines on every print template

Every properly set-up print file has three concentric boundaries:

  • Bleed line (outermost)— 3 mm outside the trim. Background colours, photos and patterns must reach this line. Nothing important lives here; it is designed to be cut away.
  • Trim line (middle) — the finished size of the piece. This is where the blade is aiming.
  • Safe area (innermost)— 3 mm inside the trim. All text, logos, phone numbers and anything you cannot afford to lose stays inside this.

So a standard 3.5 × 2 in business card is built on a 3.75 × 2.25 in canvas (with bleed), trims to 3.5 × 2 in, and keeps its text inside a 3.25 × 1.75 in safe zone.

The four mistakes we see most

1. A background that stops exactly at the trim line. This is the classic. The design looks perfect on screen because the artboard is the finished size — but there is nothing beyond the edge, so any cut movement exposes white paper. Extend the background past the trim.

2. Text too close to the edge.A phone number sitting 1 mm from the trim will sometimes survive and sometimes get clipped, which is worse than consistently wrong because you only find out after the run. Pull it in.

3. A border designed to be even. Thin borders are unforgiving — a cut drifting half a millimetre makes one side visibly thicker than the other, and the eye catches asymmetry instantly. If you want a border, make it thick enough that a small shift does not read, or skip it.

4. Adding bleed by scaling the artwork up. Enlarging a finished design to create bleed pushes everything else outward too, so your text ends up closer to the edge than you intended. Extend the background specifically, rather than scaling the whole file.

Folded and multi-page pieces need more care

On anything folded, the tolerance stacks. A tri-fold brochure is cut and then folded, and each operation has its own small variance. Panels on a folded piece are also not all the same width — the panel that folds inward has to be slightly narrower so it does not buckle against the fold.

For menus and brochures, keep content well clear of fold lines. Text running across a fold is hard to read and any fold drift makes it look misaligned. Ask us for a template for your specific fold rather than building one from scratch — the panel maths is fiddly and getting it wrong is expensive.

Booklets add a further consideration called creep: as pages nest inside each other, the inner pages push outward slightly and get trimmed marginally more. On a thick booklet that is handled in imposition, but it is another reason to keep content inside the safe area.

Stickers, signs and large format

Stickers need bleed for the same reason, and die-cut shapes need it more, not less — a cutting head following a contour has its own tolerance. Keep important detail well inside the cut line on custom stickers.

Large-format signage often needs more than 3 mm. A vinyl banner that gets hemmed and eyeleted loses material into the hem, so the artwork must extend far enough that the hem does not eat your design. Anything wrapping around a rigid substrate needs enough bleed to fold around the edge.

These are not standard 3 mm situations, so tell us the finishing you want when you ask for a template. The bleed requirement depends on how the piece is finished, not just on its size.

Exporting the file correctly

Export as PDFwith bleed included and crop marks on. In InDesign and Illustrator that is in the Marks and Bleeds section of the PDF export dialog — tick “Use Document Bleed Settings” and “Crop Marks”. If you set up a bleed area but do not tick the export box, the bleed is silently discarded and you have done the work for nothing.

Other things worth checking before you send: images at 300 dpi at final size, colour mode set to CMYK rather than RGB, fonts embedded or outlined, and text as vector rather than a flattened raster so it stays crisp.

If any of that is unfamiliar, send what you have. Fixing bleed on an otherwise good file is a small job, and we would much rather do it at quote stage than have you reprint.
