Personalized Hoodies in Canada: Names & One-Offs
One hoodie with a name on it is a normal order — no minimum on digital printing. Where a name fits, print versus stitch, and how to avoid a misspelling.
- One is a normal order
- There is no minimum on DTF and DTG — we will print a single hoodie. A one-off with somebody's name on it is an ordinary job here, not a favour.
- The blank
- Gildan 18500 Heavy Blend — 8.0 oz/yd² fleece with a brushed interior, double-lined hood and front pouch. The youth cut is the 18500B, same fleece, no drawcord.
- Every piece can be different
- Names, numbers or entirely different text per garment are normal. You approve the full list before checkout, because a misspelled name is the one error that cannot be fixed after printing.
- Where a name goes
- Upper back is the convention for a name, left chest for a monogram. A hoodie front print stops at the pouch pocket, about 9.4 inches down, so long names work better across the back.
- Volume pricing
- Large orders get volume pricing. In the online design studio the per-piece price drops at 12, 24, 50 and 100 pieces, and every colour of the same garment in one order counts toward the same price break.
- A person checks your file
- Every order is reviewed by a human designer before it goes to press. A person checks artwork resolution, colour, sizing and placement, and either fixes the file or tells the customer what is wrong — it is not an automated preflight.
- Turnaround
- Standard turnaround on clothing is 1–2 weeks. Most apparel orders can rush — 4–5 business days or 1–3 business days, priced at checkout — and every order shows the dates it will be ready before you pay.
One hoodie is a normal order
The question behind most searches for personalized hoodies is really will anyone actually make me just one? Yes. There is no minimum on DTF and DTG— a single hoodie with one name on it is an ordinary job, and it costs the same to set up as the first hoodie of fifty.
That is a property of the method rather than a kindness. Digital printing, unlike screen printing, has no screens to make and no setup to amortise, so there is nothing that needs spreading over a quantity. Screen printing is the opposite — it starts around 6 pieces and only becomes the better value past roughly 24 to 50 — which is why a one-off is always printed digitally.
So the honest shape of it: a single personalized hoodie is not cheap per piece compared to a bulk order, because you are paying for a garment and a print rather than a share of a big run. It is simply possible, and it is quick.

Three different things people mean by personalized
They get mixed up constantly, and they cost different amounts:
- One design, many hoodies. Not personalization at all — that is a custom order, and quantity drives the price down hard. See the custom hoodies guide.
- One shared design plus an individual name. The most common request: a team crest on the front, a different name on each back. Each personalised piece costs a little more than a plain run of the same design.
- A genuinely different design per hoodie. Possible, and effectively a series of one-off orders. There is no quantity break, because nothing is being repeated.
Most people asking for “personalized hoodies” want the middle one. Our names and numbers process handles it: one row per garment with the name and the size, typed in or pasted from a spreadsheet, and checkout waits until you approve the whole list.

Where a name actually fits
A hoodie is a more awkward canvas than a t-shirt, and personalization runs straight into the reason: the pouch pocket. A hoodie front print effectively stops at about 9.4 inches down, where a t-shirt gives roughly 13.6 inches.
Which leaves three sensible places for a name:
| Placement | Standard width | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Upper back | 11″ | Full names, long names, team numbers |
| Left chest | 3.5″ | A monogram, initials, a first name |
| Sleeve | 3″ | A year, a short word, a number |
The practical rule: a long surname at 3.5 inches on a chest becomes unreadable, and the same name at 11 inches across the back is fine. If you are personalising a group, check the longest name on the list first and size the whole set to that — it keeps the batch consistent. Our hoodie placement guide covers every position on the garment.
Printed or embroidered names
Both work, and they suit different jobs. DTF printing handles any number of colours with no setup and no minimum, which makes it the default for one-offs, gifts and anything with a graphic beside the name. It is also the faster of the two.
Embroidery reads as the premium option and lasts longer, because thread is worked into the fabric rather than sitting on it. For a single first name or a monogram it is lovely. The catch is cost structure: embroidery needs digitizing, a one-time conversion of the artwork into a stitch file, and a different name on every hoodie means a different stitch file on every hoodie. For a batch of individual names that adds up fast, which is why personalised groups are usually printed and single gifts are often stitched. Our embroidered hoodies guide goes into it properly.
One thing fleece does to both: it has a nap, a slightly raised surface. Bold type survives it; thin script with hairline strokes does not. A name in a delicate font is the most common thing our designers flag on a personalised order.

Getting the names right, which is the whole job
On a personalised order the printing is the easy part. The failure mode is spelling, and it is unrecoverable: a misprinted name is a wasted garment, not a reprinted line.
Three habits that prevent nearly all of it:
- Collect names from the people who own them. Not from a registrar’s list, not from a group chat, not from memory. People spell their own names correctly.
- Confirm accents and hyphens explicitly. Chloé, O’Brien, Jean-Luc. These are the ones that get flattened in transit between a spreadsheet and a print file.
- Read the approval list out loud. You approve the full name list before checkout. That step exists for exactly this reason, and it is worth two minutes.
And the thing we will do at our end: every order is reviewed by a human designer before it goes to press. A person checks artwork resolution, colour, sizing and placement, and either fixes the file or tells you what is wrong — it is not an automated preflight. What a designer cannot do is know that your colleague spells it Stephen rather than Steven. That part is yours.
Gifts, matching sets and group orders
Personalised hoodies cluster into a few recognisable jobs, and the advice differs:
- A gift for one person. DTF, one piece, no minimum. Order with time to spare — standard turnaround is 1–2 weeks plus shipping, and rush costs more.
- Matching sets for a family or a couple. Same design, different sizes, sometimes different names. Still one quantity for pricing if it is the same garment.
- A team or a club. Shared crest plus individual names — see hoodies for grads, teams and clubs.
- Staff. Usually a logo rather than a name; custom hoodies with a logo covers that case.
The quantity rule worth knowing for any of them: in the online design studio the per-piece price drops at 12, 24, 50 and 100 pieces, and every colour of the same garment in one order counts toward the same price break. Personalised pieces still count toward the break — the names add a little per garment, they do not split the order into separate quantities.

Frequently asked questions
Can I order just one personalized hoodie in Canada?
Yes. There is no minimum on DTF and DTG, so a single hoodie with a name on it is an ordinary order. Digital printing has no screens to make, so nothing needs spreading across a quantity. It will not be as cheap per piece as a bulk run — you are paying for a garment and a print rather than a share of a big order — but it is entirely normal and it is quick.
Where should the name go on a hoodie?
Across the upper back for a full or long name, at our standard 11-inch width. A monogram or initials suit the left chest at 3.5 inches, and a year or a short word fits a sleeve at 3 inches. Avoid planning a long name for the front: the pouch pocket stops a hoodie front print at roughly 9.4 inches down, where a t-shirt gives about 13.6.
Can every hoodie in the order have a different name?
Yes, and it is one of the most common orders we run. It goes through the names and numbers process: one row per garment with the name and size, typed in or pasted from a spreadsheet. Each personalised piece costs a little more than a plain run of the same design, and checkout waits until you have approved the full list.
What happens if a name is misspelled?
It is the one error that cannot be fixed after printing — a misprinted name is a wasted garment rather than a reprinted line. That is why you approve the complete name list before checkout. Collect spellings from the people themselves rather than from a list, and confirm accents and hyphens explicitly; those are what get flattened between a spreadsheet and a print file.
Should personalized hoodies be printed or embroidered?
Printed, usually, when every piece has a different name. Embroidery needs digitizing — a one-time conversion of artwork into a stitch file — and a different name on each hoodie means a different stitch file on each hoodie, which adds up quickly. For a single gift with one name, embroidery is lovely and lasts longer. We will tell you which suits your job before you pay.
Do personalized hoodies still get bulk pricing?
Yes. The per-piece price drops at 12, 24, 50 and 100 pieces, and personalised pieces count toward that break — the individual names add a little per garment rather than splitting the order into separate quantities. Every colour of the same hoodie in one order counts together too.
How long does a personalized hoodie take?
Standard turnaround on clothing is 1–2 weeks, plus shipping. Most apparel orders can rush — 4–5 business days or 1–3 business days, priced at checkout — and every order shows the dates it will be ready before you pay. For a gift with a fixed date, order early rather than paying for rush.
Design it yourself. A human designer still checks every order.
Our free studio gives you the price and the mockup in the browser. What it doesn't do is print your file blindly — every order is reviewed by a real designer before it reaches the press.
- Step 1You design it — free
Upload your logo, drop it on a real garment, set the size and placement, pick colours and quantities. No account, no deposit, no waiting on a reply.
- Step 2A human designer checks it
Before anything prints, one of our designers opens your file and checks resolution, colours, sizing and placement. If it won't print well, we fix it or tell you exactly what's wrong — a person, not an automated preflight.
- Step 3You approve, then we print
You get the corrected mockup back on the actual product. Nothing goes to press until you say yes — then it's ready in 1–2 weeks, or in 1–3 business days with a rush.
