Midjourney, DALL-E, ChatGPT images and Canva AI make great-looking logos and terrible print files — a 1,024-pixel raster is only about 3.4 inches wide at print resolution, with soft edges, invented lettering and a background that just looks transparent. Here is what each printing method actually needs, why upscaling never fixes it, where the ownership and trademark risk sits, and how a human designer repairs or redraws the file before you approve a free mockup.

Why an AI image almost never prints as-is
This question comes up constantly now, and the honest answer is more encouraging than people expect: the idea is usually fine, the file is not. AI tools are very good at composition, style and colour. They are not producing artwork files. They are producing pictures of artwork — flat rectangles of pixels that look convincing on a phone and fall apart the moment a machine has to reproduce them at 11 inches across on cotton.
The gap is structural, not a quality complaint. A generator outputs a rasterimage: a grid of coloured pixels with anti-aliased, slightly blurry edges, baked-in shadows, and a rendered impression of a background. Printing wants the opposite — defined shapes, separable colours, hard edges, and an explicitly empty background. Nothing about the AI file is wrong. It was just never built for a press.
So the real work is translation. Somebody has to take the picture of a logo and rebuild it as an actual logo. That is a person's job, and at our shop it happens before your order goes anywhere near a machine. If you want to see the problem for yourself in about ninety seconds, drop the AI image onto a real shirt in the free studio at the size you actually want it. Soft edges and grey halos are invisible on a chat screen and extremely visible at 11 inches on a navy tee.
The six things that go wrong with an AI logo file
These come up in roughly this order, and they are the reason a file gets bounced back rather than printed.
- Resolution. This is the big one, and it is simple arithmetic. Printing wants around 300 pixels per inch at the finished size. A 1,024-pixel image is therefore about 3.4 inchesof usable width — fine for a left chest, nowhere near a full front, which needs roughly 3,300 to 3,600 pixels. Blown up to 11 inches, a 1,024-pixel file is printing at under 100 ppi and it looks exactly like that: soft, mushy, with visible stepping on every diagonal.
- The fake background.Ask for a logo and you will often get a logo sitting on a rendered surface — a soft grey studio gradient, a paper texture, a faint drop shadow. That is part of the picture, not behind it, and on a coloured shirt it prints as a visible box or a dirty halo.
- Soft edges. Every shape in an AI image is anti-aliased, meaning the boundary is a gradient of semi-transparent pixels rather than a line. Screens love that. Ink does not.
- Invented text.Generators still produce lettering that reads correctly at thumbnail size and turns into nonsense up close — a rogue extra stroke on an R, two letterforms fused, inconsistent spacing, a serif that appears on three letters out of seven. On a shirt somebody will be wearing for two years, that is not a small thing.
- Colours that do not exist in ink. Screens emit light, so they can show a neon that no pigment can reproduce. Those glowing magentas and electric cyans come back duller in print, and that is physics rather than a printer cutting corners. The full explanation is in our guide to CMYK versus RGB for printing.
- No real transparency. Covered properly further down, because it is the single most common misunderstanding we see.
None of this is unique to AI, incidentally. The same six problems arrive with logos pulled off a website or screenshotted from a PDF — there is a whole guide on preparing logo files for printing. AI just produces them all at once, and at a level of visual polish that makes the file look far more finished than it is. What each printing method actually needs from the file
"Print-ready" is not one standard. Each decoration method has a different appetite, and an AI image fails each one differently.

The practical read: full-colour, painterly AI art wants DTF, because it prints unlimited colours with no setup fee and no minimum. Flat, bold, two- or three-colour art on a bigger run wants screen printing, which is cheaper past roughly 24 to 50 pieces and lays down brighter ink — but only after the design has been reduced to genuinely separable colours. Embroidery deserves its own warning. You cannot embroider an image, full stop. Someone has to redraw the design as a stitch path — deciding fill direction, stitch density, underlay and colour sequence — and fine detail that looks great on screen simply cannot be stitched at 3 inches on a cap. Transparent background versus a white box (and the PNG that only looks transparent)
This one costs more reprints than anything else on the list, so it is worth being blunt about. There is a difference between an image that looks transparent and one that is transparent.
A genuinely transparent PNG has an alpha channel — the pixels outside the artwork contain no colour at all, so nothing prints there and the garment shows through. A file that merely looks transparent has a white or light-grey rectangle painted into it. On a white shirt you will never notice. On black, navy or maroon, that rectangle prints, and you get a logo in a box.
The AI-specific trap is funnier and more annoying: ask a generator for a transparent background and it will sometimes draw the checkerboard. The grey-and-white chequered pattern that design software uses to represent emptiness is, to an image model, just another visual pattern worth reproducing. We have received files where the transparency was literally painted on, pixel by pixel. It prints. All of it.
Two more things to check. A JPG can never be transparent — the format has no alpha channel, so if your file ends in .jpg it has a background whether you can see it or not. And a design with white elements needs those elements to actually be white in the file, not "the background showing through"; on a white garment that distinction is invisible until you switch the shirt to black and half the artwork disappears. Upscaling is not the answer. Redrawing is.
The instinct when a file is too small is to make it bigger, and there is no shortage of tools that promise to do it. Understand what they are doing: an upscaler cannot recover information that was never captured. It invents plausible pixels between the ones you have. On a photograph that often looks great. On a logo it produces smooth, slightly waxy, subtly wrong edges — and it will happily smooth a broken letterform into a confidently broken letterform at four times the size.

Vector is the real fix.A vector file stores shapes, curves and colours as maths instead of pixels, so it scales from a cap to a banner with no loss whatsoever and prints with genuinely hard edges. Converting an AI image to vector is not a filter you apply — it is a rebuild, where someone traces the forms, sets real colours, replaces the invented lettering with actual typefaces, and cleans up the parts the generator fudged.

One honest caveat: a redraw is a judgement call, not a photocopy. If the AI image has texture and painted lighting baked into every shape, a faithful vector version does not exist — a simplified interpretation does. That is usually a better shirt anyway. Who owns it, and what we will not print
A plain word on this, because it comes up and skipping it would be a disservice. This is not legal advice, and if a logo is going on merchandise you intend to sell, it is worth twenty minutes with someone who does that for a living.
Read the terms of the tool you used.Every generator sets its own rules about what you may do with the output, and they differ by tool, by plan and by month. Some grant broad commercial use; some restrict it to paid tiers; some reserve rights you would not expect. Whether an AI-generated image can be copyrighted at all is a separate and still-unsettled question in several countries — which matters mostly if you want to stop other people from using your logo later. If a mark is going to represent a real business for years, that is a serious argument for having it drawn by a person rather than prompted.
Trademark is the sharper risk, and it is entirely independent of the AI part. Generators are trained on the visual world, so they will cheerfully produce something that sits very close to a brand you recognise — a swoosh, a familiar bitten fruit, a team crest, a character. Printing that on shirts you sell is the same problem it has always been, and "an AI made it" is not a defence.
So here is our line, stated plainly: we will not print obvious third-party intellectual property— brand logos, trademarks, sports team marks or copyrighted characters — regardless of which tool generated the file. If your artwork lands in that territory, the designer reviewing your order will tell you before anything is printed rather than after. The process is deliberately built so you never pay for a surprise. Four steps, and nothing is charged until you have approved a mockup at the end of the third one.
One: put the artwork on a garment yourself. The free design studio takes no account and no deposit. Two: a human designer opens your file. This is the part that matters for AI artwork, and it is not an automated preflight that emails you a red X. A person on our team looks at the resolution at your printed size, the edges, the background, the colour range and the placement, and then either fixes the file or tells you exactly what is wrong and what the options are. If the art needs redrawing to survive, we say so, and we say what it will change.
Three: you approve a free mockup before you pay. Every order gets a digital mockup on the actual product, showing the repaired or redrawn artwork at the actual placement. When the AI image is worth keeping, and when to start over
Not every AI file is salvageable, and pretending otherwise wastes your money. Rough triage, based on what actually comes through the door:
- Print it close to as-is when the art is full colour, big and bold, the file is large enough for the size you want, and the background is genuinely transparent. One-off tees, event shirts and personal designs land here often. DTF handles them well.
- Repair it when the concept is right but the background is fake, the edges are soft, or the file is a little small. That is a clean-up job, not a rebuild.
- Redraw it as vectorwhen it is a real logo — something going on uniforms, signage, business cards and shirts, reused for years, screen printed at volume, or embroidered. Anything that needs to exist at more than one size needs to be vector eventually, and doing it once now beats doing it badly three times.
- Start over when the lettering is invented, the composition depends on painted lighting, or the mark sits uncomfortably close to a brand you did not create. One thing worth saying to anyone using AI as a starting point rather than a finish line: it is a genuinely good idea generator. Use it to explore twenty directions in an evening, pick the one that makes you sit up, then have that one built properly. The prompt is the sketch, not the deliverable. Either way, try it on a real hoodie or tee first — scale changes your opinion of a design more than anything else, and it costs nothing to look. Why does my Midjourney or DALL-E logo look blurry when it's printed?
Because it is being enlarged past the information it contains. Printing wants about 300 pixels per inch at the finished size, so a 1,024-pixel file is fine at 3.4 inches and soft at 11 inches. Anti-aliased edges make it worse: what looks like a crisp line on screen is a gradient of semi-transparent pixels, and stretched across a full front it reads as fuzz. Do I need to convert an AI image to vector before printing?
For a one-off full-colour DTF or DTG print, often no — if the file is large enough and the background is genuinely transparent, it can print as it is. My AI image has a transparent background — why is a white box still printing?
Two usual causes. Either the file is a JPG, which has no alpha channel and therefore always carries a background, or the generator painted a background into the picture — including, sometimes, drawing the grey-and-white checkerboard pattern that design software uses to represent transparency. A file that looks transparent and a file that is transparent are different things, and the difference only shows up on a coloured garment. A designer checks this on every order before it prints.
Can AI art be embroidered?
Not directly. Embroidery machines follow a stitch path, not an image, so the design has to be digitized — someone redraws it and decides stitch types, densities, direction and colour sequence. Painterly AI artwork almost always has to be simplified first, because fine gradients and thin detail cannot be sewn at 3 inches on a cap or a left chest.
