What a laser is actually doing to the surface
Every question about what you can engrave is really a question about physics, and the physics are simple enough to hold in your head. A laser puts a very small, very hot dot of energy on a surface and moves it around. What happens next depends entirely on what the surface does with heat: it darkens, it melts, it fractures, or it gets vaporised off a layer underneath. Nothing is added. That is the whole difference between engraving and printing, and it explains almost every quirk in this guide.
Wood chars. Acrylic melts and frosts. Glass and slate micro-fracture into a white etch. Coated metal has its coating ablated away so the bright base shows through. Leather scorches. Bare metal mostly just reflects the beam and sits there looking smug, which is why it needs a different machine or a sacrificial coating.
The practical upshot: you do not get to choose the colour. You get the colour that material makes when it is burned, frosted or stripped. A logo that lives or dies on being a specific brand red is a printing job, not an engraving job. A logo that reads perfectly in one tone is an excellent engraving job, and it will still read perfectly in ten years.

Wood: the most forgiving material, and grain decides the contrast
Wood is where most people start, and it deserves the reputation. It burns cleanly, it engraves fast, it takes fine detail better than glass, and a burned line on a pale wood has a contrast that photographs beautifully. Plaques, coasters, ornaments, cutting boards, signage, cake toppers, memorial pieces — wood does all of it.
The variable nobody warns you about is the wood itself. Light, close-grained species like maple, birch and basswood give you a clean dark mark on a pale field, which is the look people have in their head when they picture engraved wood. Oak and ash have aggressive open grain, so a fine line crossing a hard growth ring engraves unevenly — the ring resists, the soft wood between it burns deeper. Dark walnut engraves gorgeously but the contrast is lower, because you are making a dark mark on already-dark wood.
Plywood and MDF are consistent and cheap, which is why they dominate laser-cut signage and retail displays, but the cut edge tells on you: plywood shows its plies, and MDF edges come out dark brown no matter what. That is fine on a rustic sign and wrong on a corporate award. Bamboo behaves like a hard, fibrous maple and is the usual pick for cutting boards and premium coasters.
One hard rule: we do not laser anything containing PVC or vinyl. Burning it produces chlorine gas, which destroys the machine and is genuinely dangerous. If you supply your own blanks, tell us what they are made of. If you are not sure, send a photo and we will tell you before anything gets ruined.
Acrylic: cast frosts bright white, extruded barely marks
This is the single most useful thing on this page, and almost nobody selling acrylic blanks mentions it. There are two kinds of acrylic and they engrave completely differently.
Cast acrylicis poured into a mould and has an irregular molecular structure. When you engrave it, the surface shatters into a bright, opaque, milky white — the classic frosted award look, glowing when lit from the edge. Extruded acrylic is pushed through a die, which lines the molecules up neatly. It cuts more cleanly than cast and it is usually cheaper, but engraved it goes gummy and pale rather than white. The mark is there, it just does not pop, and on clear stock it can be nearly invisible from the wrong angle.
So: cast for engraving, extruded for cutting. If you are buying your own acrylic awards or signage and the listing does not say which one, assume the cheap one and ask. If you buy blanks from us we buy cast for anything that will be engraved, because the whole point of an acrylic award is that frosted white.
Acrylic is also the material where reverse engravingearns its keep. On a clear panel you can engrave the back face and read it, correctly oriented, through the polished front — the artwork sits inside the piece rather than on it, and it cannot be scratched. It is a small trick that makes a $20 blank look like a $60 one. Combine that with a laser-cut outline and you get award shapes that are genuinely custom, not catalogue. Metal: coated and anodized engrave beautifully, bare metal does not
Metal is where expectations and reality separate hardest. People picture a laser cutting into steel. What actually happens on most shop lasers is that the beam bounces off a polished metal surface and does essentially nothing.
What engraves brilliantly is metal with something on it. Anodized aluminum — the hard dyed oxide layer on black, blue or red aluminum — ablates away instantly and leaves crisp, bright silver lines. It is the sharpest, highest-detail result you will get from any material on this list, which is why name tags, equipment plates, asset tags and rack labels are almost always anodized aluminum. Powder-coated and painted metals behave the same way: the coating is removed, the base metal shows through. Coated brass and the coated steel/aluminum plates used in trophy assemblies are the same story.
Bare metal is the exception. Uncoated stainless, brass, raw aluminum and titanium generally need one of two things: a marking spray or paste that bonds to the surface under laser heat and leaves a permanent black mark, or a fibre laser, which is a different machine from the CO2 lasers that do everything else in this article and is the right tool for annealing and deep-marking raw metal. Both are real options; neither is automatic. The other metal variable is curvature. Flat plates are simple. Round items — tumblers, bottles, pens — need a rotary fixture that spins the piece under the beam. Cylinders are fine. Tapered or oddly-shaped vessels are where a job goes from routine to fussy, and a photo saves everyone a phone call.
Glass, slate and leather: frosted etch and rich scorch
Glass does not really engrave, it fractures. The beam heats the surface until a shallow layer micro-cracks, and the result is that familiar soft white etch on wine glasses, pint glasses, awards and bottles. It looks expensive and it is permanent, but it is a low-resolution surface: the etch has a slightly grainy texture, and fine hairlines, thin serifs and delicate photographic detail get lost in it. Bold logos, names, dates and monograms are what glass is for.
Glass is also the material where the blank matters most. Tempered glass can react badly, curved surfaces need the rotary, and cheap glassware with an uneven wall gives you an etch that is strong on one side and faint on the other. If you have a hundred glasses to do for an anniversary, we will test one first — and if it does not come out right, that is one glass rather than a hundred.
Slate behaves like glass with better manners. Coasters, cheese boards and house-number plaques engrave to a chalky pale grey against near-black stone, and the contrast is high enough that slate is one of the few materials where a greyscale photographgenuinely works — more on that below. Slate is natural stone, so the surface varies piece to piece and the edges are rough by design.
Leather is the friendliest of the three. It scorches to a dark, slightly recessed mark with a faint debossed feel that people cannot stop touching, and it works on wallets, journal covers, patches, keychains, coasters, aprons and bag tags. Real leather engraves darker and more evenly than most bonded or synthetic leathers, and finishes vary enough that we will usually test a corner. Powder-coated tumblers and drinkware, honestly assessed
Engraved tumblers have quietly become the default corporate gift in Canada, and the reason is the coating. A powder-coated stainless tumbler is a bare steel vessel with a thick coloured layer baked onto it. The laser strips that layer in a clean line and leaves bright bare stainless underneath, so you get a high-contrast silver logo on a matte black, navy or white body. Nothing sits on the surface, so nothing peels in a dishwasher, nothing scratches off in a truck cupholder, and nothing fades in a windshield of summer sun.
That is a real advantage over a printed or vinyl-decorated tumbler, which is a consumable by comparison. It is also why drinkware survives being a gift: the person still has it two years later, and your logo is still on it.
Two things to know before you order a batch. First, the engraved area is small— a tumbler wraps, so the readable window is usually a few inches wide. A logo with a tagline, a URL and three lines of small type will not survive that reduction. Simplify to the mark and one line. Second, the coating decides the look, not the brand on the box. Some coatings strip to a bright clean silver, some go slightly grey, and some cheap coatings chip at the edge of the engraving. We test one before running a batch, every time.

Laser engraving vs printing: where each one wins
These get compared as if they compete. They mostly do not — they fail in opposite directions, and knowing which failure you can live with settles the decision in about a minute.
Engraving wins on permanence. There is no ink, no vinyl and no transfer, so there is no layer that can peel, crack, fade or wash off. The mark is the object. On an award that sits on a shelf for a decade, or a tool tag on a job site, or a name badge worn every shift, that is not a nice-to-have.
Engraving wins on hand-feel. A recessed mark in wood, leather or metal reads as made rather than applied. People pick engraved things up. That perceived value is most of why awards and executive gifts are engraved rather than printed, and it is almost impossible to fake with ink.
Printing wins on colour, obviously. Engraving is monochrome by nature. If your brand is two specific colours and the whole point is those colours, you want print or a decorated garment, not a burn.
Printing wins on photographs and fine detail. A laser reproduces a greyscale image as a pattern of burned dots, which is a coarse medium. A face on a 4-inch slate coaster can be lovely; the same face on a 2-inch wood keychain is mud.
And printing wins hard on volume economics. This is the one people get wrong. A screen print gets dramatically cheaper per piece as quantity climbs, because the setup is amortised and the marginal shirt takes seconds. Engraving does not work that way: the laser spends real time on every single piece, so 200 items take roughly 200 times as long as one. Quantity helps — setup and testing get spread out, and blanks get cheaper — but the curve is much flatter. If you need 500 low-cost giveaways, print them. Artwork: vector wins, photos are hard, tiny text fills in
Engraving is less forgiving of artwork than printing, because there is no colour to hide behind. Three rules cover almost everything.
Vector line art is the ideal.An SVG, PDF or AI file describes shapes and paths, so the laser follows real edges at any size — a logo scales from a keychain to a plaque with no loss. Solid shapes and clean outlines are exactly what this process is good at. Photo engraving is possible but narrow.A greyscale photograph can be engraved — it works best on slate, anodized aluminum and pale close-grained wood, at a decent size, from a high-contrast image with a clear subject. Group shots, busy backgrounds, dark hair against dark backgrounds and anything under about three inches all turn to sludge. Preparing the image matters more than the machine: contrast gets pushed, backgrounds get removed, and the result is an interpretation, not a print. Small text fills in.The beam has a physical width and burned material spreads slightly, so the counters in letters — the holes in a, e, o, g — close up at small sizes. Below roughly 6 pt, fine serif and script type turns into a smudge on wood and vanishes into the texture on glass. Thin hairline strokes have the same problem. Set the important text larger, in a slightly heavier weight, and drop the phone number if the URL is already there.
None of this is on you to get right alone. Every file gets looked at by a person before the laser runs: a human designer checks resolution, proportions and placement, and either fixes the file or tells you exactly what is wrong and why. What people actually order engraved
After the material science, the honest answer to "what can you laser engrave" is a short list of things people genuinely buy, over and over.
- Awards and recognition pieces. Cast acrylic, wood plaques, slate and glass, usually with a name and a date. Volume is small, the deadline is a banquet, and the spelling of the recipient name is the highest-risk item in the entire job. Send it typed, not dictated.
- Corporate gifts.Tumblers, bottles, coasters, cutting boards, leather journals and desk pieces. This is a September and October decision for December delivery, and lead time is the whole story — production is days, but choosing, approving, counting and shipping is weeks.
- Name tags and badges. Anodized aluminum with a magnetic or pin back. Sharp, permanent, and unbothered by a dishwasher-heavy workplace. They pair naturally with embroidered uniforms so a team looks assembled rather than accumulated.
- Interior signage and wayfinding. Engraved or laser-cut acrylic and wood for office doors, suite numbers, dedication plaques and retail displays. Outdoor and large-format go to signage instead.
- Personal gifts. Cutting boards, ornaments, keychains, pet tags, memorial pieces, wedding favours. No minimum means one is a real order, and one is what most people want.

The pattern is consistent: engraving is what you choose when the object is supposed to last and to feel like something. It is not the right answer for 500 disposable giveaways, and we will say so.
What it costs, how long it takes, and how to start
Engraving is priced on three things: the blank, how long the laser runs, and the setup. The blank is straightforward — a $6 coaster and a $60 crystal award are different orders before anyone turns a machine on. Laser time scales with engraved area and density, so an outlined logo is quicker than the same logo filled solid, and a full-wrap design costs more than a left-chest-sized mark. As an indicative range, a single engraved tumbler or name tag often lands around $12–$25, and awards and plaques sit higher because of the blank itself. Treat those as a starting point rather than a rate card — the real number depends on your item and your artwork, and a quote costs nothing.
