Construction Site Signs: Project Boards, Contractor Signs and What Lasts a Build
Site signage splits into four jobs: the 4x8 project board the public photographs, contractor identification, site-rules signage at the gate, and hoarding graphics along the fence. Match the material to the build — coroplast for a season, aluminum composite for a multi-year site — and mount it properly, because that is what most failures come down to.

The four signs on a job site, and who each one is for
Site signage gets bought once, at mobilization, by somebody who has forty other things to do that week and who will not think about the sign again for two years. That is exactly why the decision matters. Nobody re-evaluates a job site sign. It goes up, and then it is either still legible when the building tops out or it is a faded, cracked, flapping advertisement for a company that does not finish things.
It also helps to stop treating "site signage" as one purchase. There are four distinct signs on most builds, they have four different audiences, and they justify four different levels of spend:
- The project or development board. Large, public-facing, usually 4 ft x 8 ft. Names the project, the developer, the builder, sometimes the architect and the major trades. This is the one neighbours photograph and prospective buyers look up.
- Contractor and trade identification. Smaller panels, one per company on the lot, zip-tied to the fence. Cheap, replaceable, and the ones that actually generate phone calls.
- Safety and site-rules signage. Gate signage, PPE notices, no unauthorized entry, site office direction, emergency contact. Read at walking distance by people entering the site.
- Hoarding graphics. The long printed run along the fence or plywood hoarding. Read at walking pace by pedestrians for the whole length of the project.
Buy them as one order and you get better pricing and a consistent look. Buy them as one material and you overspend on the disposable pieces and underspend on the one that has to last.
The project board: the one the public photographs
Almost every development board is 4 ft x 8 ft, and the reason is unglamorous: coroplast, PVC, aluminum composite and plywood are all manufactured in 4x8 sheets. Order 4x8 and you are using a full sheet with no waste. Order 5x9 and you are paying for two sheets, a seam, or a custom cut. If you need bigger, going to two 4x8 panels mounted side by side on a shared frame is almost always cheaper than one oversized face, and it has the side benefit that you can replace one half later.
What goes on it is a shorter list than most people expect. The project name, the developer or builder, a phone number, a website, and the logos of the key trades. If there is a rendering, it can carry half the board on its own. What does not belong: a paragraph about your company values, six certifications set in 40 pt type, and a full list of services. This board competes with traffic, not with your website.
Mounting is either two posts set at the lot line or bolts straight through a hoarding wall. Decide which before you order, because it changes the material, the panel thickness and whether we drill mounting holes or add grommets. A board built to be bolted flat to plywood and then post-mounted instead will oil-can in the first real wind. Contractor and trade identification signs
These are the workhorses. Typically 18x24 or 24x36, one per company working the lot, zip-tied to the temporary fence at eye height near the entrance. They cost a fraction of the project board and they are the panels that actually get a homeowner across the street calling about their own roof.
Two decisions make them much more useful. First, leave the address off. A panel that says who you are and how to reach you follows the crew from lot to lot for years; a panel with a street address on it is garbage the day you demobilize. Second, order a few more than you need. They get bent by equipment, they get taken, and a reorder of four panels costs more per piece than ordering twelve at once.

Safety and site-rules signage
Gate signage is a different design problem from the project board. It is read at walking distance by someone about to enter, so it can carry more text — but it has to be unmistakable at a glance and it has to survive being leaned on, splashed by a plow and hit by a skid steer bucket.

On material, gate signage is the place not to be cheap. It lives at head height where people see it up close, it gets touched, and it is the sign whose legibility matters most on a bad day. PVC or aluminum composite, high contrast, large type, no thin typefaces. Reflective and high-visibility colour options exist and are worth asking about for a gate that gets used before dawn in January. Hoarding graphics on the fence line
Hoarding is the longest-running piece of advertising most projects will ever own. A downtown Ottawa infill site can have a hundred feet of plywood facing a busy sidewalk for two years. Left raw, it collects tags and posters. Printed, it is a two-year billboard that also happens to look like a project somebody is proud of.
There are two normal approaches. On solid plywood hoarding, printed vinyl is applied directly to the primed and painted surface, or panels are printed and screwed on. On chain-link fencing, the graphic is a banner — solid vinyl or mesh — with grommets, tied along its edges.
Panel the artwork.Do not design one continuous hundred-foot graphic. Break it into repeatable sections around four feet wide, so when a section gets damaged — and a section will get damaged — you replace that one panel instead of reprinting the wall. Keep the important content above about waist height, because the bottom two feet get splashed, kicked and buried in snowbank. And design for walking pace: big flat fields of colour, a repeated logo, a short line of copy. Fine detail is wasted at three feet from a pedestrian's shoulder and invisible from the road. Materials against an Ontario build cycle
An Ontario year is unusually hard on a sign. Freeze-thaw cycling flexes anything with a laminated structure, road salt spray sits on the face all winter, UV fades pigment through the summer, and wet snow adds weight to a horizontal top edge. A material that is fine on a two-month campaign is not automatically fine on a twenty-four-month build.

Coroplast is a season. It is corrugated plastic, genuinely waterproof and very cheap, which is why it owns the lawn sign market. But it is flutes and thin skins: it dents, the corners tear out at the fasteners, and a 4x8 sheet of it flexes enough in wind that the mounting holes elongate. Perfect for a two-month renovation or for spare trade panels. Wrong for a two-year board.
PVC sits in the middle. Rigid, smooth, no flute lines showing through the print, clean cut edges, and it holds screws and standoffs. It looks like a manufactured sign rather than a temporary one. At 4x8 it is heavy and it will bow without a frame, so it is happiest at smaller sizes. Aluminum composite is the standard for a multi-year build. Two thin aluminum skins bonded to a polyethylene core: rigid, dimensionally stable through freeze-thaw, immune to moisture, and flat enough that it still looks intentional after two winters. It takes bolts and standoffs properly instead of tearing. It costs noticeably more per panel than coroplast, and that is the correct trade — reprinting and re-hanging a project board midway through a build costs more than the upgrade did.
Plywood-backed vinyl is how hoarding is done. The plywood is already there doing the structural work, so the graphic can be a printed vinyl skin, which is the cheapest way to cover a large area and the easiest to patch. For chain-link, mesh banner is the equivalent answer.
Mounting: what actually kills signs
The sign still up and readable in year two is usually not the one made of the most expensive material. It is the one that was mounted properly. Four zip ties on a 4x8 face fails far more often than choosing PVC over aluminum composite does.
Wind is the whole problem. A 4x8 board is thirty-two square feet of solid sail, and wind force climbs with the square of the speed — a gust at twice the speed is roughly four times the load. That load goes into whatever is holding the sign: the fastener, the grommet, the fence panel, the post. On temporary fencing a solid 4x8 panel can walk an entire unweighted section over. If a large face has to live on exposed fence, use a mesh banner so air passes through, or move it onto its own posts.
- Zip ties suit small panels. Use UV-stable black ties through grommets rather than pinching the print, and more than four on anything wide — mid-span ties stop the middle oil-canning. Clear ties go brittle in sun and snap by spring.
- Fence brackets beat zip ties on anything semi-permanent, because they spread load along the rail instead of concentrating it at four corners.
- Post mounting needs through-bolts with fender washers on both faces, not screws driven straight through a thin panel — the washer is what stops the fastener pulling through. Posts set to a proper depth for frost, and a backer rail behind a large face to stop it flexing.
- Have the holes drilled with the order. Field-drilling aluminum composite with the wrong bit tears the skin and starts a crack.
So tell us how the sign is mounting when you ask for the quote. Grommet spacing, hole positions, panel thickness and hemming all follow from that one answer, and it is far cheaper to decide it before we print than after.
Designed to be read at 30 km/h
A project board gets about three seconds of attention from a driver slowing for the site entrance. That is enough for three pieces of information: who you are, what you do, and how to reach you. Company name, trade, phone number. Everything else is competing with those three for space, and losing.
A workable rule of thumb for letter height is roughly one inch of cap height for every ten feet of viewing distance — so a phone number meant to be read from eighty feet away wants letters around eight inches tall. Run that math before you design and it becomes obvious how little text actually fits on a 4x8. High contrast, heavy weight, no thin script faces, and no light grey type on white. QR codes make sense on gate signage read at walking distance and are useless on a board people pass at speed.
The other half is the file. Signage magnifies everything: a logo pulled off a website is a few hundred pixels wide and will look like mush at four feet across, and a JPEG with a white box behind it stays a white box at full size. Municipalities and developers frequently specify site signage. That can mean the size and content of a development board, whether a permit number has to be displayed, what notices go at the entrance, or design standards a developer imposes on every trade sign on the hoarding. None of it is uniform — it varies by municipality, by permit, by zoning and project type, and by the contract you signed with the general contractor or owner.
So the honest answer is: your permit conditions and your site supervisor are the authority, not us and not a blog article.
